WhatsApp is reportedly working on a ‘Secret Code’ feature that lets users find locked chats from the search bar and lock chats on linked devices.

WhatsApp developers are testing a new feature dubbed ‘Secret Code’ for locked chats. The upcoming functionality will reportedly work on linked devices and allow users to use a custom password for the protected chat folder.

According to a report by WABetaInfo, the new feature was first spotted on WhatsApp beta on Android 2.23.21.9, which can be downloaded from the Google Play Store if you enrolled in the WhatsApp beta testing program.

The new secret code feature will enable people to easily find locked chats directly from the app’s search bar and let them lock chats even on linked devices. As you can see in the screenshot below, WhatsApp recommends using a simple word or emoji so you can quickly find the locked chat.

In May this year, WhatsApp introduced a way to lock chats using biometrics or PIN codes, but many were unhappy since there was no way to lock chats on secondary devices. However, if the latest beta feature makes its way to the stable version, users will be able to keep their conversations private on companion devices as well.

As of now, WhatsApp’s new ‘Secret Code’ feature seems to be under development, so it might take a few weeks or months before it is available to everyone. In the last few months, WhatsApp developers added several functionalities to the app such as Telegram like Channels, share images and videos in HD, create groups without names and edit media captions to name a few.
