What are MEMU, DEMU, and EMU trains in India?

SHARE

In India, MEMU, DEMU, and EMU trains are all types of electric multiple unit trains used for suburban and short-distance passenger transport. Here’s what each of these terms stands for:

EMU: Electric Multiple Unit

  • They are electrically powered trains consisting of multiple carriages or coaches. They are commonly used for commuter and suburban services in densely populated areas.
  • EMU trains draw power from overhead lines or a third rail and are capable of running at higher speeds compared to diesel-powered trains.

DEMU: Diesel Electric Multiple Unit

  • Thay are similar to EMUs, but they are powered by diesel engines instead of electricity. They are used in areas where electrification infrastructure is not available or where diesel operation is more practical.
  • DEMU trains are often employed on short-distance routes and branch lines, providing connectivity to areas without electrified tracks.

MEMU: Mainline Electric Multiple Unit

  • MEMU trains are designed for inter-city and short-distance routes, operating at higher speeds than traditional EMUs.
  • They are equipped with more powerful traction motors and are capable of faster acceleration and deceleration.
  • MEMU trains typically connect major cities or serve as feeder services on longer routes.
