Three wins for Indian filmmakers at Cannes 2024

With three noteworthy wins at the 2024 Cannes Film Festival, Indian filmmakers celebrated big successes.

Payal Kapadia’s “All We Imagine As Light”: With his Grand Prix victory, Kapadia created history. Her film showcases her remarkable storytelling and cinematic vision, and it is the first Indian submission in the main competition at Cannes in thirty years.​

“Sunflowers Were the First Ones to Know” by Chidananda S. Naik: The La Cinef award for Best Short went to this movie. Student at the Film and Television Institute of India (FTII), Naik won praise for his original storytelling and directing skills.

“The Shameless” directed by Anasuya Sengupta: Sengupta’s film attracted notice and appreciation, helping to bolster India’s remarkable showing at the festival. Her productions kept up the momentum created by Indian filmmakers being recognised globally.

These victories highlight a historic year for Indian cinema at Cannes, highlighting the creative and varied talent that the nation is producing.​
