We all know how some Bollywood releases have been hit due to the lockdown. Another addition to that list seems to be Amitabh Bachchan and Ayushmann Khurrana’s Gulabo Sitabo. After going through many changes with regards to its release date, the film was finally scheduled to release on April 17. But owing to the coronavirus pandemic and the lockdown, the release had to be pushed ahead.
However, in a latest report, director Shoojit Sircar who has worked with Amitabh Bachchan in films like Piku and Pink, said that he wouldn’t mind a digital release for Gulabo Sitabo. “As a filmmaker, I’d want to see my film open in the theatres. But the situation today is unlike anything anyone had ever experienced. So, I’m open to a digital release if need be. But we will take a decision after May 3,” said Sircar. Set in Lucknow, Gulabo Sitabo is a quirky comedy, a banter between a landlord and a tenant, penned by Juhi Chaturvedi. It’s produced by Ronnie Lahiri and Sheel Kumar.
Incidentally, Bachchan’s movie Shoebite with Shoojit Sircar, made almost nine years ago, lies unreleased. It’s a movie about self-discovery. Shoebite saw an unfortunate fate as it never got a release date due to the reported clash between two production houses (reportedly Percept Picture Company and UTV Motion Pictures). The filmmaker said, “Now, that both the studios have come together, maybe it will. It’s my most innocent film since I was just starting out. The mind was pure. Every time someone discusses Shoebite, Mr. Bachchan immediately calls me excited as a child. With him, the relationship is one of mutual trust. On the last day of a film’s shoot, he looks at me with the unspoken query, ‘So, where’s the next script?’ which prompts me to write something. We’ll definitely do something again together.”
After seeing their magic together in films like Piku and Pink, we hope this jodi gets together for many more films!
